No predator on earth fascinates us like the great white. And almost none is so badly misread.
For decades, the only way to meet one was from inside a cage. Then a handful of people changed that, and what they found was not a killing machine. It was an intelligent animal with deep blue eyes that swims towards you, looks at you, and works out exactly what you are. Those images rewrote the great white’s reputation for an entire generation.
But we humans tend to swing from one extreme to the other. In fifteen years we went from fearing this shark to hanging off its fin for the camera. And that is its own kind of misunderstanding. The golden rule exists for a reason: never touch a shark. Out of respect, because none of us would want a stranger grabbing us in our own living room. For safety. And because a single viral clip can teach millions that this is easy, when it is not.
The great white is neither monster nor pet. It is one of the ocean’s most impressive predators, and it deserves to be seen as exactly that. 💙

Off the granite coast of Brittany, a legend is hiding in the cold water.
The porbeagle is a close relative of the great white, and one of the rarest sharks in Europe. In fact, more people have travelled to space than have ever dived with one. It once ruled the North Sea. Today it is critically endangered.
Finding one is never guaranteed. This is wilderness, not an aquarium, so the team dives with a strict code of conduct, treats the whole habitat with respect, and waits. And the shark is only one part of a richer world: kelp forests, spider crabs, dolphins and grey seals, all thriving inside France’s oldest marine reserve.
What makes this work special is who gets to be part of it. Every photo of a fin, a scar or a marking helps identify an individual shark, so even a first-time diver can add a new animal to the dataset and become a scientist for a day. 💙

Behind every scientific paper are dozens of stories you’ll never read.

The failed hypotheses. The unexpected observations. The moment someone noticed something that didn’t fit.

Science is often portrayed as a collection of facts, but it’s really a process of connecting tiny pieces of evidence over years—or even decades. A single photograph of an unusually coloured shark might not seem important today. Years later, combined with genetic studies, ecological data and other sightings, it could help answer questions nobody knew to ask at the time.

That’s why documenting wildlife matters. Whether it’s a researcher, diver, fisher or photographer, every observation has the potential to become part of a much bigger story.
