At UNOC, Lara was battling some serious blisters—but when asked what happened, she turned the moment into a statement: “I’m making a political statement about sharks getting killed in the ocean.”
Funny? Maybe. But what’s happening to sharks is no joke.
Shark finning is one of the cruelest practices in the animal world. Fins are cut off—often while the shark is still alive—and the bodies are tossed back into the ocean to sink and die.
The European Union claims to ban finning, but the reality is full of loopholes. Permits still allow some vessels to fin sharks at sea and land fins separately, making it hard to track and enforce the ban. Even where fins must be landed attached to the body, the massive trade in loose fins continues—meaning that European countries, such as Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal remain some of the world’s top suppliers of shark fins to Asia.
And eating shark meat?
Not just cruel, but also poses serious health risks as heavy metals such as mercury accumulate at the top of the food chain, making shark meat particularly toxic.
Even when they are not the target, sharks are dying, caught and killed as by-catch.
That’s why SHARKPROJECT is committed to creating a protected future for sharks, whose presence is vital to ocean stability and the health of our planet. Even when the facts are uncomfortable and political action is slow, we stay focused with a smile on our face and a deep conviction to change things for the better.
So we walk—limp, protest, and fight—for them.🩵🦈

Today, we’re not just celebrating sharks—we’re recognizing their vital role in keeping our oceans alive.
Sharks play a critical role in maintaining ocean health. By moving across vast distances and diving between ocean layers, they transport nutrients that fertilize coral reefs, support phytoplankton growth, and sustain biodiversity from the surface to the seafloor. Their presence regulates prey populations, preventing imbalances that can lead to algae overgrowth and ecosystem collapse.
When sharks vanish, the effects are devastating: coral reefs suffocate, fish stocks crash, and oxygen levels plummet—threatening not just marine life, but humanity itself.
We don’t just protect sharks because they are fierce or elegant—we protect them because they are foundational to the ocean’s resilience, and by extension, our planet’s survival.
Let’s amplify awareness.
Let’s replace fear with respect, and silence with science.
The health of our oceans depends on it—and so do we. 🩵🦈

May we present: Our UNOC Crew 2025 💙
Meet the people behind SHARKPROJECT who participated in this year’s #UNOC3 in Nice, France. Swipe through and find out what the ocean and fighting for marine protection mean to them 🦈.
While we each bring a completely different skill set, unique experiences and perspectives to the table – we unite in one mission: protecting sharks – on a legislative level, in policy change, through education, through art and especially, pivotal ground work through our devoted projects.
A bunch of passionate experts in their own field, drawn together by a shared drive to protect sharks, ocean life and the coastal communities that live alongside them.
On behalf of the rest of the team scattered across the globe: Thank you all for your endless efforts and powerful voices! While bureaucratic wheels might turn too slowly for our taste, we’re rolling up our sleeves and pouring out our work. it feels like we won, because of the boundless enthusiasm and effort. That’s why we said: #WeWonUNOC.
