Focus area fisheries.
Overfishing, destructive fishing methods, and the demand for shark products are endangering shark populations and thus the health of the Ocean ecosystem.
Support ProjectsDid you know?
59 %
of reef shark species are considered endangered.
70%
of the population of oceanic shark species has fallen on average in the last 50 years.
The facts speak for themselves. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of fisheries regulation, monitoring, and transparency. One of the most essential and effective means of protecting sharks is through comprehensive reform of the fishing industry. SHARKPROJECT is committed to working towards this goal with you and with your donation.
Problem
Industrial fishing is the biggest threat to shark populations worldwide. Overfishing, IUU (Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported), unselective, harmful fishing methods and the demand for shark products such as shark fins or squalene exert immense pressure on sharks and therefore pose a major threat to the health of the ocean ecosystem.
Solution
SHARKPROJECT is advocating for reform of fisheries at the national and international levels, towards ecosystem-based sustainable fisheries management. Particularly harmful fishing methods, above all bottom trawling, must be limited or banned altogether.
A 100 % observation rate using electronic tools is needed. In addition, SHARKPROJECT demands at least 30% human observers on board fishing vessels and faster implementation of new measures.
At CITES and the IUCN, SHARKPROJECT is increasingly lobbying for more shark species to be placed under stronger trade protections in order to increase the likelihood of catch bans at the national and international level

Our Approach What SHARKPROJECT wants to achieve
SHARKPROJECT is building a global network of NGOs, scientists, and experts to represent our demands with a united voice. In this context, SHARKPROJECT is also part of major global coalitions such as DSCC (Deep Sea Conservation Coalition), Ocean Flotilla, RISE Up and many more.
SHARKPROJECT is an observer to many of the major RFMOs (Regional Fisheries Management Organizations). Here, proposals for ecosystem-based fisheries management are developed and catch quotas or even catch bans for particularly endangered shark species can be achieved.
SHARKPROJECT specifically supports scientists or projects around the world that are committed to the protection of sharks. We support our partners financially or with equipment. We also act as a mouthpiece to disseminate important work and its results.
