Since 1977, the show 1, 2 or 3 has been making children’s hearts beat faster in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. And who doesn’t know the quiz show for kids in the 4th grade? With over 1,000 episodes broadcast, the show is both a hit and a fixture on German-language television.
The choice of topics is diverse – from astronauts to magicians to Olympic champions – all the big names have been on the show and inspire the next generation to reach for the stars. Environment and nature conservation are often on the agenda because, like us, it is important for those responsible to draw attention to these issues.
In May 2022, we were there too!
The SHARKPROJECT team was well represented by our marine biologist Sarah and our IT expert Max. They were able to travel to Munich for an exciting day and get to know everyone involved – presenter Elton, Piet Flosse and, of course, the quiz teams. For both of them, this was the fulfillment of a long-cherished childhood dream. After all, who didn’t want to jump on the answer board and hear the iconic words 1, 2 or 3, last chance… over! live?
The subject of the show? Fantastic fish – just right for us. The children got to know the water-spitting archerfish, saw footage from a salmon breeding station and found out why the sea hare, despite its name, can’t hop. Then it was time for the most fascinating fish – sharks, with all their distinctive features and characteristics.
Sarah spent five minutes talking to presenter Elton about the king of fish. The senses and body language of sharks were the main topics – because you can only protect what you understand. Beautiful video and image material showed a whole school of sharks taking a closer look at a diver, hammerhead sharks in search of prey and the unique carpet fringed shark. Needless to say, the children were enthralled by these exciting images. The corresponding question was also answered correctly by the quiz teams. Which resulted in a very nice prize for the class fund.
After a long day of filming, lots of fun and great memories, the SHARKPROJECT team returned home. Definitely exhausted, but the joy of the show will last for a long time. The episode will be broadcast on KIKA at the beginning of August and on ZDF in September – you can find out the exact dates via our social media.
And now it’s your turn!
Do you know the answer to the master question "What does the shark perceive with its Lorenzinian ampullae?"
1) High-pitched sounds, like the songs of porpoises
2) Electricity that prey animals generate with their cells
3) Chemicals, so that it doesn’t accidentally eat toxic waste.
One, two or three – you’ll see if you’re really right when you see the light!
