Why is shark protection or marine conservation important to you?

Primary producers generate about as much oxygen annually and sequester as much carbon as all land plants combined. Sharks form the top tier of the marine food web and control (directly or indirectly) everything below it.
Remove this level and the whole ecosystem collapses. The underwater world is a magical place that can enchant everyone and without which we cannot live.

Do you have any special skills, experiences or adventures?

  • Sharks are such peaceful and curious animals that have fallen into disrepute due to the influence of the media, among other things. That's exactly why it's important to bring people closer to these animals and show them that they are not monsters of the deep, but vital puzzle pieces of a huge food web and absolutely fascinating animals.
  • Thanks to my studies, I know a lot about the marine food web and how the ecosystem "sea" works. In South Africa, while working as a dive instructor, I had the chance to dive with sharks every day, to get to know them better and to understand how their behaviour can be interpreted.
  • I am a PADI Open Water Scuba and EFR Instructor and study "Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Science" at UHH.

And which is your favourite shark?

Galeocerdo cuvier (lat.)

Tigerhai (dt.)

Tiger shark (engl.)

There's nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself,
except that when you finally see what goes on underwater,
you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean.
